Kenneth L. Whistle, 78, of Pekin, formerly of Tremont and Punta Gorda, FL, passed away at 1:16 am Friday, October 6, 2017 at Pekin Villas of Holly Brook.
He was born April 29, 1939 in Kentucky to "Doc" and Helen Canary Whistle. He married Janet Martin on August 17, 1991 in Tremont, and she survives.
Also surviving are one son, K. Bert (Kim) Whistle of Hopedale; one daughter, Cheryl Lynn Whistle of Kansas City, MO; two step children, Melisa Gibson of Morton and C. Sam (Susan) Gibson III of Collinsville; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one brother, Elwood (Emma) Whistle of Philpot, KY; and two sisters, Patty (Gerald) Armstrong of Lebanon Jct., KY and Darlene (Roy) Finley of Madisonville, KY.
He was preceded in death by one infant son and one infant brother.
Raised in Kentucky, Ken developed his strong work ethic early in life. After graduating from eighth grade, he went to work on the family farm tending tobacco and cattle. When the opportunity came, he moved north to central Illinois and started Whistle Tree Service. While on the job, he would notice how many roofs needed attention and founded Whistle's Tremont Roofing. With both businesses thriving, Ken had a vision for a yet another business to provide material for building contractors. Midwestern Building Supply was founded from that vision and has grown to include three stores.
The only thing stronger than Ken's work ethic was his love for the Lord. Ken spent countless hours helping to spread the Gospel and in his simple way showed those around him the love of God. His employees knew that work was important, but that God and family came first and that they would be supported in time of need by Ken.
He was an avid supporter of many organizations doing the Lord's work and made missions trips to Mexico, Guyana, Puerto Rico, Canada, as well as various parts of the United States. His mission trips combined his desire to serve others with great love of travel.
A celebration of life service will be at 6:00 pm Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at Eastside Bible Church in Morton. Pastor Steve Weber, Pastor Phil Cooper, and Jerry Trecek will officiate. There will be no visitation. Private family burial will be in Olio Cemetery in Eureka. Davis-Oswald Funeral Home in Tremont is handling the arrangements.
